Why You Should Care About Turmeric

Throughout both of my pregnancies, I’ve found myself turning more and more to natural and clean products.

Not to mention that when you have a 4 year old and an infant, I’ve become even more hyper-aware of the products I use on the girls, myself and around the house. (PS: check out my clean beauty picks here and Jane’s eco-friendly story here!) I’ve done so much research on different holistic treatments and I love learning about all the amazing natural remedies out there. Around my house and the office, it seems like we can’t stop talking about all the amazing benefits from Turmeric. If you remember from this post here, I used this face mask/scrub made with turmeric while I was pregnant with Colette, and it opened my eyes to all of the amazing things turmeric does for you.

If you don’t know what turmeric is, it’s a type of spice that’s a healing herb and part of the ginger family. It’s widely used for its restorative powers and gorgeous warm yellow hue. It’s benefits include:

  • Mental clarity
  • Anti-Inflammatory
  • Natural pain killer
  • Supports heart health
  • Improves mood

… just to name a few!

It can be used topically and internally. From foods to teas, to face masks and supplements- it’s a serious miracle herb! I’ve seen turmeric lattes, teas, face masks, gr8nola, serums, supplements, milk, seasonings, and even hair products.

Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. So when looking for a turmeric supplement, be sure to look to see if it has curcumin. Another thing to be mindful of is black pepper because curcumin is easier absorbed when there’s black pepper, so a lot of supplements include it.

Turmeric also stains easily, so if you’re using it as a seasoning or in a DIY mask, be mindful and don’t wear an all white dress like I did here. (PS: check out this DIY Turmeric mask for under eye circles!)

Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite turmeric products:
