Jane and Hannah Detox Their Beauty Routines

Chriselle has written about Clean Beauty for the blog a few times, but it wasn’t until recently that we decided to take a look at our own routines.

In efforts to be more conscious of what goes on and in our bodies, we’re starting to sprinkle clean makeup and skincare products into our daily routines. Just like starting on any new products, the key is to transition a little bit over time. Starting a whole new routine from one day to the next could wreak havoc on your skin.

What Even Is Clean Beauty?

According to Goop, it’s “It means a non-toxic product that is made without a long, ever-evolving list of ingredients linked to harmful health effects from hormone disruption, to cancer, to plain-old skin irritation.”

Why You Should Care

A lot of skincare and makeup companies can use marketing to make you think that what you’re using is ‘clean’ and/or ‘organic’ but there are actually no practices enforced to verify that.

A lot of products are formulated with chemicals that aren’t good for you. Like, parabens, sulfates SLS and SLES, phthalates, mineral oils, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, and triclocarban.

We’d like our skincare to not have ‘formaldehyde-releasing agents,’ THANKS.

Jane

So…I have a confession. I never REALLY thought about “clean” or “detox beauty” on a deep cellular im-really-going-to-think-about-this-and-really-process-it-type-of-level until this year. While I love talking about gut-health, probiotics, ashwaghanda and things like that… I didn’t think too much about the toxins and chemicals I was putting on and into my body until I started working here and became more versed in the beauty space.

Growing up, I was a total tomboy. I was always outside being physical and volleyball was LIFE. My mom and sister are minimalists and my monthly allowance at the time allowed me to purchase either one bottle of Persa-gel for my zits or a bottle of Clearasil face wash. Clearly – the goal here was to clear up my acne.

Fast forward to present day and I’m so happy to see how much the times have changed! Now, you have a thousand acne solution products that actually look chic in your bathroom AND work. Who would have thought?!

I’m happy to see that there are so many choices out there for consumers now and really love seeing clean beauty brands thrive and shine.

I know that thinking about clean beauty can be extremely overwhelming so I talked to The Detox Market a few months ago while researching this story and asked them where does one even start “cleaning up” their beauty routine? It’s intimidating, I know. They suggested that you detox the parts of your beauty routine that you put stuff on the most – like your lipstick since you’re basically eating your lip balm/lipstick while eating.

Another very important item to clean up in your beauty routine is your deodorant as it’s so close to your breast tissue. Natural deodorants absorb moisture and prevent odor through the use of natural ingredients like probiotics, magnesium, and essential oils. Sidenote: it’s important to note that as you make the switch to natural deodorant, it can take your body up to a month to adjust and expel impurities to get rid of the toxins like aluminum that it was once reliant on.

With that said, here are some of my top clean beauty picks and why I love them.

Kjaer Weis Beautiful Oil

From the ingredients to the packaging – Kjaer Weis is such a beautiful and thoughtful brand. I love using their beauty oil in the morning and night. It’s made from 100% natural-origin raw ingredients and gives my skin such a nice glow. If I’m feeling a bit dry, I’ll mix some of the beauty oil into the foundation for a creamier concealer-like consistency. I can wear this all day without feeling like my pores are clogged and the glow and coverage I get is amazing. There’s something so satisfying about wearing a clean oil and foundation all-day.

Cle Multi Cream

I love using this multi cream while I travel. It’s great as a moisturizer and hand cream and easily fits in any bag. It’s also infused with subtle Palo Santo oil and extract that smells so calming.

True Botanicals Clear Radiance Oil

I am truly obsessed with this line! I mean, there’s a reason why Olivia Wilde, Laura Dern and Zazie Beetz are all obsessed with them! I like using their moisturizer in the mornings with sunscreen and layer it onto my cellular repair serum at night. At first, I was hesitant to only use this oil without another face cream, but it has proven to be a game-changer for me and my skin. This oil smells so good, balances my oily t-zone and leaves my skin feeling clean and moisturized all day long. I also love that they’re certified Made Safe meaning they’re certified products made safe for humans and the ecosystem.

Kosas 10-Second Eyeshadow

These water-based eyeshadows feel weightless, dries quickly, are so easy to use. It actually got me excited to wear eyeshadows again and is perfect for women like me who are always on the go that don’t necessarily have that much time to get ready.

Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum

This serum is worth the hype, people! I tried this one night and my skin instantly felt moisturized, brighter and refreshed when I woke up. It also felt nourished and looked glowy. This oil is definitely on the pricier side but worth it.

Detox Mode Here + There Balm

I always moisturize my lips at night right before I hit the hay so I don’t wake up with crusty, cracked lips. I got this one from the Detox Market and LOVE IT. It’s a great way to make sure you’re not sleeping (and eating) toxins while you’re getting your R&R. Bonus points if you add it to your elbows and heels while sleeping.

Hannah

If I had a dime for every time I’ve heard ‘clean beauty’ in the last year, I could probably pay off my student loans. It’s everywhere! To be honest, I wasn’t really *interested* in clean beauty. Don’t get me wrong, I knew it would be good for me but I didn’t want to sacrifice all of the other beauty products I love!

When Jane and I decided to start this story, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was already using (and loving) a lot of clean beauty! With just a few swaps in my routine, I think I’m well on my way to using more clean beauty.
