Since I’m still breastfeeding Chloe every other hour, I’ve been working from home a lot lately! Unless I have to step out for meetings, most of the time I’m just answering emails and blogging from my house. But let me tell you guys .. working from home isn’t as glamorous as people might think! If you’re not careful, it can easily turn into you (or me) being in your pajamas for days at a time. And who can get any work done while being in their pajamas all day? Some of us just feel compelled to play with a baby half the time.. am I right? But love it or hate it, work is work! And here are some tested and proven tips for you guys to maintain productivity while working from home!
1. Get Dressed
What I mean is .. Get up, shower, and get dressed! It’s so easy to feel like you’re not working when you’re in your pajamas, and even unmotivated because you have no where to go. I’m not saying get full on decked out in makeup and shoes, but even a shower and styling your hair can do wonders! (On the flip side, working from home is a great time to give your pores a break from wearing makeup every day!) Since I’m still wearing my corset, I don’t like wearing tight pants when I’m working from home. I find that shirt dresses like this one is perfect for being comfortable while still keeping things professional!
2. Designate a Work Space
The best and worst thing about working from home is that you can work anywhere! You can be on your couch, your bed .. but that can be detrimental to productivity because laying on my bed with a laptop just makes me want to watch Netflix hah! I’ve been finding it very helpful to designate an area that’s my “office.” I have things on my desk to remind me of my desk back at the office! Flowers (white roses) and candles are of course a must. And my fashion books to keep me inspired while I’m working!
3. Get plugged in
It’s the same for when I work out too, I just need music to help me get focused. Being at home can be distracting because now I have a cute baby and a nanny walking around the house so in order to focus, sometimes I just have to plug in for an hour or two with my music to forget my surroundings! Sometimes it’s about quality not quantity, and you’d be surprised with how much you can get done with a steady hardcore 2 hours of work if you just focused! (vs 4 hours of distracted work.) Try noise canceling headphones like the ones below too if your home tends to get loud!
4. Open a window
It can get pretty depressing feeling like you’re stuck in a house all day. So that’s why I personally like working in bright airy places so I don’t get uninspired. I’m an incredibly visual person, so having a lot of light helps me be creative. And having fresh air definitely helps liven up my senses and keeps me awake!
5. Take a break
Last but not least, don’t forget to play with your dog every once in a while! Just kidding. But definitely be sure to schedule in breaks! I know how easy it is to continuously sit behind a computer and forget how much time has passed by, but firstly it’s not healthy for you to sit at long periods of time, and secondly it’s not good for productivity when you’re feeling worn out. Go out for a coffee run or an actual run, but don’t forget to take your breaks!
And there you have it, 5 tips I’ve been using to make sure I stay productive during my time at home right now. What are some tips you guys have? Share with me in the comments below!

Tip number three is golden! I have created a specific playlist of songs that get me motivated and so far it’s been really helpful. Every time I hear some of them on the radio, they trigger me and get me into that working mood!
Right? Music motivates me so much!
Absolutely great tips Chriselle. I usually end up in my nightie when I’m working at home. Now I know better *grin*

Great tips and reminders! I recently started working remotely full-time since we moved out of state and I totally agree with your tip #1! Being in workout clothes ALL day can be such a drag… besides who likes showering at 6pm and putting yourself together just to have dinner and go to bed?! I’d much rather start the process off right in the early morning 🙂
I actually set a timer to ring every 30 minutes. Otherwise I’ll go straight through and end up so tired. Instead I get up every bell and walk, exercise, make tea, do something else. Anything to change things up and circulate the body and brain. I’ve heard it’s much better for productivity.
Great tips!
Would please do a home tour. You have amazing taste
Working from home “can” create those schlumps you’ve described and, at some point, I’ve been guilty of every single one of them 🙂 these days, I have official working hours which are split into sub-categories of to do lists ranging from correspondence, networking, branding and writing, with a pre-set lunch hour. This schedule appears to be working thus far so I’m pleased. I doubt I’d be able to give up the comfort and ease of working from home.

dressing up may sound a little silly in your own house but that really helps! maybe not dress-dress up but at least be presentable enough for yourself.. haha 🙂 thanks for the great tips chriselle xx
I have been working from home for a year now on my blog and all the tips you listed are on point. I however get my work done at night when everyone is asleep because during the day it’s almost impossible…so lucky that you have a nanny to help out for those few hours!

Great tips! I always work at home with my Pj’s, so I’ll try actually getting dressed and see if it makes me a bit more productive 🙂

You look gorgeous and this post is so helpful! My favorite tip is the first- whenever I stay home, I’m tempted to stay in PJ’s all day, too. But getting dressed really makes a difference in how much I get done!
Great tips! Definitely going to try to put these into practice!

Great tips. I recently started a small online business and I’m fully focused on it without a day job, and it gets pretty depressing sometimes being at home alone. Changing into day clothes, putting on some make up, and designating a specific work place definitely helps!!

Fashion Advice, Events and More
I have worked from home periodically throughout my career and now that I am in my eighth month of pregnancy I am working from home more often and will be looking to do more of this whilst I am at home with my baby, when she arrives. I think you’re points are so helpful – whether you’re pregnant/ post-natal or not – for instance, getting dressed and getting fresh air make you feel so much better than if you keep yourself cooped up in pjs all day. I think the tip about shirt dresses is particularly helpful for me at this point in my pregnancy because they are comfortable, yet smart and professional so I will definitely be picking up a few more shirt dresses for post-pregnancy before my baby is due. Thanks very much 🙂 xx
Thank you for your tips, even if I don’t work at home I agree with you
Set a timer.
If I am working from home, I tend to procrastinate a lot. So setting a timer and not check my social media, do the dishes or clean during this time is very important to get things done.

Thank you Chriselle for this post! It is so helpful! I find all your 5 tips so right, I am a super visual person too, so (almost) Spring days help me being creative so much more than rainy and cold ones 🙂
Green tea is my break tip. And a walk outside, just to buy a bunch of fresh flowers and recharge batteries.

Great tips, I thing the dressing up part is the best. One shouldn’t work in pj’s no matter where they’re work space is.

Great tips, I totally agree with you! My fave is getting dressed, designating a work space, and opening a window – they definitely increase my motivation to get work done ❤
munchies&musings
I so agree with you! When working from home it helps me to get dressed and music is always a fast way for me to get things into gear. Having TV on is something I used to do and it’s certainly the worst idea I ever had while working from home. It broke my focus all the time and I wouldn’t recommend it. I thought I could catchup on shows as I worked and that was just not the case.

Getting dressed and taking a break from time to time are very crucial ones for me and they always work like a “charm”. 🙂

It can be pretty difficult to focus and get things done when you are at home in your pajamas..
