Although I love rocking my short hair, I majorly struggle with styling my hair to get the perfect effortless waves. If you follow me on Snapchat, you know that I’ve been going to 901Too salon to get a blowout and I love how they perfect my hair every time! So I asked my friends at BYRDIE and 901Too to give a few useful tips and suggestions on styling short hair like mine. I hope you find these tips as helpful as it was for me because styling my short hair has never been this easy (and the tips are just as useful for the long haired girls)!! Here is a step by step guide on how to get perfect and effortless waves!
To get the perfect effortless wave look, start out with a curling wand/barrel. The shorter your hair is, the size of the curling wand should be smaller (we used a 1-inch barrel to curl my hair.) When you are curling your hair, you want the ends to be out, meaning don’t clamp the ends and leave about one to two inches on the bottom. This will be the key to creating an effortless look.
Part your hair into sections so you can curl your hair easier and to make sure you don’t miss any strands of hair!
As you are curling, the KEY thing is to make sure to alternate the movement of the wand (forward and backward) for every strand of hair. This will give an illusion of a fuller and voluminous hair.
Another thing to keep in mind is to let your ends out! This means not to curl all the way until the ends. That way, your curls fall more naturally!
After you are finished with curling, use a texturizing spray to set the curls. The spray will give a gritty feel, which will hold the curls in place and doesn’t leave the hair crispy and crunch like hairsprays do. If you want to use a hairspray, our friends at 901Too recommended using a light hairspray to hold the curls without weighing them down and to spray the flyaway in place.
Texturizing Spray: Unite Texturiza Spray Dry Finishing
Hairspray: Unite Tricky Lite Finishing Spray
This is probably the most fun step! Run your hands through your hair and watch your hair get more voluminous! Shake out your curls for an effortless wavy look!
And there you have it, my secret to the effortless wave curls I’ve been rocking! There are so many ways other than curling to style short hair. To see more short hairstyles, check out my feature on Byrdie right here!

[…] Effortless Waves for Short Hair […]
I love your hairstyle ! It looks so natural and effortless .
My hair is already wavy and very thick .How can I make my waves look more stylish (like yours )without adding more volume ??
Also the front of my hair is so straight it doesn’t seem to fit into the rest of my hair ,should I just curl the front part ?
I have asked my hairstylist(s) so many times but they don’t seem to understand my problem .
Thanks for the tutorial. I love your hair style btw

Thanks love! Have a wonderful day! xoxo
I love how you style your hair. These curls look so effortless. In the summer I’ve been into curling my hair but now in winter i prefer it straight or just in a bun.
I like curling my hair with straighteners but the curls are staying only for few hours and with curling iron you have them for a couple of days.

I love this look! My hair is very thick and when I curl it, the volume gets crazy large and the effortless look becomes too forced. Do you have any tips on how/what I should do? What is your hair like and how do you manage it?
Hey Mai! My advice would be to curl every other piece. That way you still get the look of the curls but with out it being overwhelming! xoxo
Your curls came out so perfect! I prefer loose curls anyway and I think this style looks great on you. It looks so effortless, which I really love. Plus your haircut is adorable! Thank you for this post! It was very helpful

I’m really into the effortless waves. It gives me the, “Congratulations, you did your hair and look put together,” look while also looking like it didn’t take very long to achieve – or perhaps it looks like it’s even *gasp* natural!
