Whether it’s a summer dinner party, a rooftop garden party, or just a backyard BBQ, it’s important to never show up empty handed. So, what makes for a good summer hostess gift? A good hostess gift should clearly express your gratitude and should also make your host’s life easier after you leave. Here are some original summer hostess gift ideas from Kathy Kuo Home to ensure you’re always invited back.
1. A Planter with Flowers
Step up the traditional gift of cut flowers with a planter and a plant that can keep on living, indoors or out. Since so many flowers are in bloom right now, your hostess can use the planter as a tabletop centerpiece or place it on their front stoop or outdoor area, so it’s not a burden to find a place for once the party (and the summer) is over. And if you do go with cut flowers, make sure to place them in a decorative vase before handing them over.
2. Beautiful Barware
Bringing a bottle of champagne is always a nice gesture, but why not pair it with a gorgeous set of flutes? Bringing a one-of-a-kind bottle opener or wine stopper is also an easy idea, because you can always use more than one.
3. Decorative Bowl or Box
Buy a bag of artisanal candies or chocolates, and offer them presented in a beautiful decorative bowl or decorative box. Decorative bowls and boxes make for a great hostess gift due to their versatility. Once the party is over, they can go anywhere in the house and be used for flowers, jewelry, potpourri, office supplies, or several other odds and ends.
4. A Candle Lantern
A candle is a very intimate gift, and unless you know the personal scents your hostess likes, you’re going out on a limb every time you choose a candle as your hostess gift. And while a candle can be a great option, they often go unused or are used up very fast. For a gift with more longevity, bring a candle lantern or candle holder. A candle lantern is a decor item that most would love to include in their home, and it can be placed in both indoor and outdoor settings.
5. Decorative Coasters
One of the best items to have extras of at the party is coasters. We’re all about furniture here at KKH, so help your hostess protect her table and countertops by bringing along a nice coaster set. They serve a purpose, they look great, and most people could use new ones.

It might be the most important room in your house, so why not make it look good?
A candle lantern sounds like such a great idea! I know it’s not necessarily as a hostess, but I have been looking for a gift for my friend and I think a candle lantern would be a great thing to give her. She has a lot of candles, so it will definitely compliment her house very well.
Loving all of these great ideas, especially the decorative bowls and the plants <3 🙂 Everything is so pretty! Haha and I agree – it's never good to show up empty handed! Thank you so much for sharing these great tips and inspirations!
