5 Ways to Sneak In Exercise Into Your Everyday Life
Getting into a workout routine is not an easy feat. Especially if it’s not something you’ve really made the time for before or, if you love making excuses to not work out. Getting fit is definitely easier said than done and requires discipline.
All of us on the CINCteam have our own workout routines… or lack thereof- but the common denominator between all of us is to become healthier in the new year. Whether that means a diet change, (are any of you doing Dry January? Jane is!) or incorporating more physical activity, it’s all about baby steps.
While it might not be totally realistic to schedule in a full hour workout 5 days a week, there ARE super simple and easy ways to get in a little physical activity. We wanted to share our top five ways to sneak in exercise into your everyday life.
All of these tips are things that we do daily. They’re nothing drastic, but they’re easy things that you can start doing TODAY to get in a little exercise. That way, if you don’t make it to the gym or accidentally sleep through your 6 am pilates class… you can still break a sweat and feel like you still did something!
Think of all the mundane routines you do every day. Brushing your teeth, watching TV (and/or Netflix), sitting in traffic… ext. Throwing in little movements into those routines is a great way to keep moving. Our Editor Hannah does calf raises while she brushes her teeth, morning and night. When you’re watching TV, do some arm pulses… or even do some easy exercises while you’re waiting in traffic.
Adding in small movements might not make you sore the next day, but they’re a great habit to get into!
Take the Stairs/ Park Your Car Further Away
Okay, this is a no brainer- but it helps! Skip the elevator and take the stairs or park further away so you get in extra steps. If you can’t get your 10,000 steps in a day, set small goals for yourself and monitor them on either your Apple Watch, your Fitbit or even the Health App on your phone. If you drive a car, park it further away and get those extra steps in to and from what you’re picking up.
Make it Social
Having someone, your BFF, your S.O., your wifey, your hubby, your mom, your neighbor- working out with someone can help not only pass the time but keep you accountable. It doesn’t even have to be a workout, either! Maybe you take a walk or a hike. Maybe your coffee date will be grabbing some coffee to-go (don’t forget your reusable cup!) and a walk around the park?
Household chores like cleaning can really burn some calories. Sweeping, vacuuming, scrubbing, dusting… even putting on a fitted sheet are all ways to keep your body moving. Even chores like washing your car or giving your dog a bath! Bonus points if you put on ankle weights!
Stretching is SO underrated, and you don’t have to go to a Yoga class to do it either! There are so many amazing resources on YouTube to help you unwind, and specific stretches if you’re having neck problems, back problems, etc. Stretching helps manage stress, improves posture, helps improve digestion, reduce anxiety… the benefits are pretty much endless.
