WTF is Cuffing Season
Have you guys ever heard of cuffing season?
The academically credible and reliable source, Urban Dictionary defines Cuffing Season as the time: “During the Fall and Winter months people who would normally rather be single find themselves along with the rest of the world desiring to be “cuffed” or tied down.”
It usually spans from the time sweater weather first hits, through the holidays when all of your relatives are asking if you’ve found a S.O, ending around Valentine’s Day. These aren’t serious relationships either- a cuffing season relationship is understood to be temporary. It starts with kind of an unsaid expiration date.
Long ago was ‘hot girl summer’ where you were frolicking around in a bikini on a beach or by the pool flirting with any guy who would stand still long enough … we’re now getting deep into ‘cozy girl fall’ where everyone wants a teddy-bear sweater and to cuddle on the couch watching Disney+ with their boo. Or, I mean, that’s what it looks like on Instagram at least, I cannot confirm. 😉
So a few weeks ago, Jane and I had a conversation about cuffing season and she suggested I write about it, so I started to do some research.
Every article that I’ve found that talked about cuffing season (save one hilarious Man Repeller article) was so serious. They all had accompanying tips to help ’get cuffed.’ Things like stepping up your flirting game, going out of your comfort zone, hitting up ‘old flames.’ It all sounded kind of ridiculous.
Side note: do not hit up an ‘old flame’ that fire went out for a reason let it go.
Surviving Cuffing Season Picks
Don’t get me wrong, I get the appeal of boo-ing up for cuffing season. It’s cold outside you want some rom-com moment holding hands at an ice-rink or having a date to bring to your office Christmas party- but jeez!
First of all, don’t settle. Being single during the holidays might be lonely, and a little depressing… and sure you have to watch all the cute couples kissing under the mistletoe and hate-like all the cute photos on Instagram and… wait I forgot where I was going with that…
Oh, right: don’t settle. Do you like them or is it just cold outside?
So, single girls and guys beware of cuffing season.
Or celebrate it- you do you! At the end of the day, you’re worth so much more than a relationship with an expiration date.
