What to Wear to a Wedding — Dress Codes Decoded
Wedding season is in full swing.
When you read this, I will actually be in Hawaii for my cousin’s wedding! Time really does fly and it feels like Allen and I just got married but we’re actually approaching our anniversary in August but now, with two beautiful and special girls.
Since we tied the knot, we’ve attended countless weddings. From local weddings, international weddings and tropical weddings. One of my favorite things to do during wedding season is picking out what to wear. Weddings are such a great excuse to get dressed and glammed up, but have you ever gotten an invitation and had no idea what ‘semi-formal’ or ‘dressy-casual’ actually meant?
With so many different types of dress codes, figuring out what to wear can be a little tricky! Don’t worry, I’m here to help. I’ve done some research and broken down some of the most popular dress codes to make shopping a little bit easier.
I also took a trip down memory lane and found some of Allen and my wedding photos! It genuinely feels so crazy to think that ‘Down the Aisle with Chriselle‘ happened so many years ago.

Black Tie dress code means that the wedding will probably be during the evening. While the guys should dust off the tux, women can have a little more fun. Think a full length gown or a dressy cocktail dress.
This dress is gorgeous! I love the crisscross neckline, and the color is perfect for any black tie wedding.

A big part about the semi-formal or dressy casual dress code is the time and place of the wedding. If it’s an evening wedding, darker colors are more appropriate… for a daytime wedding, you can do lighter colors and fabrics.
Similarly, if it’s an outdoor wedding, be sure to take into account the weather and the terrain. You don’t want to be walking through grass in stilettos and sinking!
This dress is so cute for a summer wedding! It's a good length and under $150!
A casual or destination dress code means that you can break out that really cute sundress that you’ve been waiting for an excuse to wear. Perhaps some chic espadrilles? It’s also a great excuse to play with more casual fabrics like linen.
This dress from Reformation is perfect, flirty and you'll definitely wear again!
