Local Life

Photography by Karen Chen

One of my favorite things about traveling is being able to interact with the locals. Because what’s the point of traveling if I’m not able to go outside of my comfort zone to learn something new? On my second day in the Bahamas, I was able to visit downtown Bahamas to see the local life. It was so interested being able to walk down the street of vendors where every shop carried something different. I picked up this hat from this amazing old lady who proclaims herself as “the best hat maker” on the island. My hat was hand woven and is easily foldable to fit in my luggage, it’s such a unique find. But the coolest find was this little coconut shack by the waters where the owner cut down fresh coconuts to give you the freshest coconut water.

Now that I’m pregnant I’m very cautious of the things I put into my body (one of the reasons why I quit coffee!) But when I saw this coconut stand in the Bahamas, I immediately knew I had to try it. Coconut water has so much benefits for your body, I definitely recommend you guys incorporate it into your diet. Coconut water is great for flushing out your system, and it’s low in fat but high in potassium. It’s so hard to stay healthy while traveling, so I’m really glad I was able to have this on my trip. I’m sad I won’t be able to get coconut water cut fresh from the trees anymore, but it’s definitely a drink I’m having regularly at the local marketsย to stay healthy!
