It’s truly a blessing when you can wake up every morning and look forward to what the new day will bring about. As a freelance stylist I can say I absolutely love what I do and although it takes ALOT of hard work it never seems like work because it’s something I love to do. When you are passionate about something you do it because you love to do it and not because of the money. Eventually the money will come after building your resume, portfolio & clientle.
Michelle & I decided to create this video for the striving and aspiring artists out there. Here we teach you the basic steps and tools you need to successfully start your freelance career!
I didnt get to mention all the tools of the trade in this video..so listen closely..im about to share with u what all stylists must have (via school of style) :
ALL STYLISTS MUST HAVE:
1.) Garment bags: For keeping all of the fancy borrowed clothes safe and sound.
2.) Sand paper: Great for roughing up clothes to make them look perfectly worn in.
3.) Leather hole punch: For punching extra holes into belts and things.
4.) Ziploc bags: These are a must!! Just trust me, you will use them.
5.) Prop bag: To hold all of your stuff and to keep it all organized.
6.) Rolling racks: Where else are you going to hang the clothes?
7.) Steamer: The most efficient way to remove wrinkles.
8.) Hand steamer: Awesome for getting wrinkles out in a hurry (just remember to unplug when you are finished.)
9.) Black safety pins: Bet you didn’t know they came in black?! Great for making temporary alterations to clothing without the shine of a standard safety pin.
Now the fun part about a stylist is that you now must start “collecting” aka SHOPPING! Find pieces that will photograph well, that you can use in your portfolio. You want to expand your closet with a variety of accessories, shoes, and clothing pieces. One of my favorite things to do is go to thrift stores and dig dig dig…this one time I found a pair of Vintage Dior combat boots! Like I said a Stylist is like a pirate looking for his treasure, a leprechaun looking for his rainbow, a princess looking for her knit & shining armor, a Stylist looking for that PERFECT dress! So to sum it all up…Life’s a treasure hunt…lets go dig dig dig!
